Retaining Our Hope in the Growing Darkness

We live in a world that increasingly walks away from God. Mankind reaches out to find answers to the growing problems they face but very few seek Godliness. We must, like Noah, continue to proclaim the Truth of God through our actions and attitudes. Our hope in the plan of God is the only rock that will keep us above the sins and approaching judgement for mankind.

Are We Always Half Empty?

Habits can change our outlook, positively, when we commit to really changing.  Compare that with the time spent in being overwhelmed with Satanic principles in our lives.  Everyday we must make a choice in the path we will walk on. It is in the small steps we choose to take that determine where our path will lead.

Preparing for Kingship

We were created to become part of God’s Family. The world denies this fundamental truth, even among professing Christianity. Our individual role as part of God’s great plan is to prepare ourselves to become part of the Family of God.

“Prepping” for Our Future

Many believe that the current world is not going to remain as it is today. Be it political or racial unrest or even the increase of natural disasters, a subculture of people are preparing for apocalyptic conditions. “Preppers”, as they are called, stockpile food, survival gear and even construction of secure facilities to safeguard against what they perceive as tumultuous times ahead.

A survey taken in 2017 on finder.com lists the following results, “More than 160 million American adults (65.45%) are estimated to have either recently purchased survival gear or, interestingly, are already in possession of survival gear because they always keep them on hand. The remaining 85 million (34.55%) are not preparing for the end of the world as we know it. Of those who report prepping, 36.35% spent up to $400 on survival kits in the past 12 months.”

This “prepping” has become more than safeguarding from a local disaster, it has become a multibillion-dollar business.  Currently, you can go to your local Costco and buy a $6000 1-year food supply pallet for a family of four. An article in Marketwatch.com states, “Preppers shell out impressive cash in the name of survival. One prepper, Bob McDevitt of Reno, Nv., told Moneyish that he’s spent between $150,000 and $200,000 stocking up on supplies, including two years’ worth of medical equipment, food, and water. He now lives full-time in an RV.”

While there is nothing wrong in being prepared for natural disasters, we must understand that there is no escape from the judgment that is going to come upon this earth. “For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape” (1 Thessalonians 5:3).

This “prepping” mindset can easily overtake and consume our time and focus. The Jews of Christ’s time fell into this trap with their reliance on the physical instead of the spiritual laws. Christ stated, “‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone’” (Matthew 23:23).

We must be “preppers” but not in a physical sense.  Our actions and efforts must build up stores of spiritual fruit, not the foodstuffs that are perishing. Christ gave us advice on the kind of daily focus we must strive toward, “‘Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods’” (Matthew 24:44,46-47).

For those who humble themselves before God, we know that there will be an escape from trials and tribulations. “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

God kept Noah and his family alive as the world was destroyed around them and will likewise guide us through the coming judgment on this world if we keep our focus on satisfying His Will.

Is Our Trust Aligned with our Goals?

It is easy to state that we “trust in God” but do our actions acknowledge that fact?  Trust isn’t demonstrated by statement, it is proven by action.  Our belief in God must fundamentally be ingrained in every part of our lives.  It is in that state that we confirm what it really means to have trust in God.

The Best Rating

For years I have run an online business on one of the large internet sales platforms. One of the important factors of my business deals with the customer rating of my past performance.  I not only receive monetary benefits from a high rating but it helps potential customers understand my selling history and honesty. It is easy to see the results from my actions, because I am incentivized to be successful. This has built-in motivation to excel in performance.

There is nothing wrong with this kind of goal but this accomplishment, along with all other physical pursuits, is not lasting. As Christians, it is critically important that we do not let these kinds of physical desires become the end-all in our daily lives. We must strive for something greater, something that the world sees as a closed-minded rejection of “enlightened” understanding. We must, by worldly standards, become fools if we are to please God. “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” (1 Corinthians 1:27).

The world is brimming with the proud. Whether it is because of accomplishment, wisdom or wealth, mankind has again built a tower to glorify themselves. But God sees this attitude, as He did in Babel, with the same disdain.  Christ tells the church of the Laodiceans: “… you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked” (Revelation 3:17).  And, as is prophesied, mankind will soon see all of the ungodliness that they have built fall into ruin. Greed can never be satiated. Instead, addicts will try to fix their greed with more of the same. This attitude, as Jude states, will lead to destruction: “Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah” (Jude 11).

Paul also understood the effects this arrogance could have on those that have been called out of this world: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” (I Timothy 6:10). Our sense of accomplishment, even in the daily aspects of our lives, must hinge on God. We must be entrenched in our faith if we have any hope of pleasing God. John states, “… for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith” (1 John 5:4, New American Bible).

Success that leads to true victory begins with and dwells on the love of God. There can be no greater accomplishment, no greater motivation to succeed, than to be told, having spent a life dedicated to pleasing God, “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your lord” (Matthew 25:21).

How should we confront worldly reasoning?

As worshipers of God, we are set apart because of the knowledge bestowed upon us through the Holy Spirit.  We are called to be ambassadors for a way of life that is foreign to our world. This understanding changes how we perceive reality, both physically and spiritually.  Because of this gift we must become guardians of the Truth, withstanding the wiles of the devil through our commitment to the Truth.

Paramount to a Christian is the necessity to guard the Truth of God.  Jude told a spiritually besieged church, “Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).

Jude understood how precarious it was for the Church as Satan’s influence crept into and adulterated the Truth, “For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ” (Jude 4).

Allowing this precious understanding to become tainted in any measure will lead us away from the Truth. Once we begin making concessions with the Truth, we will find ourselves walking down a path that is not easy to come back from.  What was once fact too often becomes doubt when worldly reasoning takes root.

David understood the value of Godly wisdom, “How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame? How long will you love worthlessness And seek falsehood? Selah. But know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The LORD will hear when I call to Him” (Psalm 4:2-3).

Throughout the book of Psalms David wrote about Godly Truth and how important it was in separating himself from ungodly understanding. He also understood that the Truth would empower him with Godly wisdom, “Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom” (Psalm 51:6). That same wisdom is available to each of us through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

The Truth will set us free (see John 8:32) but that by no means constitutes continued freedom without commitment on our part to remain unspoiled from worldly desires. Throughout the ages, many who once understood the plan of God lost it.  The will of the self prevailed over the Will of God in the hearts of the individuals once called.  Many found themselves walking down a path of destruction instead of life.  Paul reflected on this throughout his ministry, “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits.’ Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame” (1 Corinthians 15:33-34).

Destruction is the end for those who reject the Truth of God.  Unless we are firmly grasping and seeking God’s Truth, we are subject to having it stolen away.  Peter warned of this to the church, “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed” (2 Peter 2:1-2).

It is important not to place ourselves into environments or engage with those bent on destroying the Word of God.  While most wouldn’t state that as an intent, the end result of denying the Truth is still the same.  Surrounding ourselves with godlessness will eventually break down our resistance.  Lot did just this. It is true, of course, that God delivered righteous Lot when He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, as we read in 2 Peter 2:6-8: “… and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, [God] condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)…” However, Lot was so entwined with his own desires that “…while he lingered, the men [angels] took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city” (Genesis 19:16).

Becoming embroiled in meaningless pursuits (worldly arguments) will leave us spiritually empty and unable to confront evil.  We read about this slumber that overtook the early church, “…of whom [Jesus Christ] we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food” (Hebrews 5:11-12).

Facing godlessness on a daily basis requires more than simply accepting the Truth in our lives–we must love the Truth and seek it (see 2 Thessalonians 2:10). Solomon understood this need, “Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, And do not disdain it. Blessed is the man who listens to me” (Proverbs 8:32-34).

Confronting the godlessness that permeates this world is the reason we have been called.  As lights, it is in fact our duty.  We must always have the mindset to “…sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil” (1 Peter 3:15-17).

Having the ability to comprehend the Truth is what separates us from a world that has chosen to ignore God.  It is a blessing that we must protect.

Fair-minded in an Age of Contempt

We have been called out of darkness into light.  As lights we must shine with glory, illuminating those that are in darkness.  But darkness is never satiated, it constantly spreads into all aspects of human character.  The world has chosen this state of being and is comfortable in—an attitude we must constantly be on guard against.
